How to Start Small: Buying Bicycles from China Below Standard Factory MOQ

Short answer: Standard factory MOQ for bicycles from China is about 50-150 units per model for city bikes, 50-100 for mountain and folding, 25-75 for road, 100-250 for kids' bikes and 25-50 for e-bikes. Those figures assume custom OEM production of one model in one colour. A stock model, a mixed-model container, consolidated factories or an LCL trial let you start far below them.

What is the MOQ for each type of bicycle?

CategoryTypical MOQ per model (OEM)What sets the minimum
E-bikes (HS 8711.60)25-50 unitsBattery and motor allocation, EN 15194 / UL 2849
Road bikes25-75 unitsFrame moulds, groupset allocation
City / commuter50-150 unitsPaint batch size, line efficiency
Mountain bikes50-100 unitsFork sourcing, frame size mix
Folding bikes50-100 unitsHinge assembly, frame tooling
Kids' bikes (EN ISO 8098)100-250 unitsLow unit value, colour and sticker sets

Read these per model and per colour: three colours of one city bike are three minimums. Frame sizes split freely.

Stock model or custom build — which lets you start smaller?

Stock, decisively. A custom run forces a re-tool — new jigs, a purged paint booth, printed decals and cartons — so your MOQ becomes the sum of every sub-supplier's minimum. Factories instead keep two to four house models per category in their own colourways, already tested to EN ISO 4210 or CPSC 16 CFR 1512, and will release 20-50 units. You still get head-badge decals, saddle prints and your own cartons, but not bespoke geometry. See our products page.

How do you fill a container without one big order?

Mix models, and mix suppliers. A 20ft holds roughly 250-300 bikes, a 40ft about 450-520, a 40ft HQ around 500-600 — fewer for heavier e-bikes. Instead of 300 city bikes, take 80 city, 80 mountain, 60 folding and 80 kids'. Cargo from two or three factories can also be trucked to one warehouse, inspected together and loaded as one FOB shipment on a single bill of lading.

When does LCL make sense for a trial order?

When you want less than roughly a third of a container. Bikes ship in individual cartons around 85-90% assembled, so a few dozen units move as loose cargo. Expect higher per-unit handling and 7-14 extra days.

Can you ride on another buyer's order?

Often, yes. If a batch of the same model family is already scheduled, a small quantity can be added so the line still sees one qualifying run overall. Your units share the frame, paint, components and sailing date of the base order — good for filling a gap in your range, bad for a fixed launch date.

How do you scale up to full MOQ afterwards?

StageVolumeCustomisationProduction after deposit

2. Mixed-model FCL20ft, 250-300 bikesStock colours, own cartons25-40 days
3. Multi-factory consolidation40ft or 40ft HQStock plus one custom line40-55 days
4. Full OEM programmeCategory MOQ aboveColour, decals, spec, packaging45-70 days

Each stage answers one question before you fund the next: does the category sell, does the spec survive your customers, does your network cope with warranty? By stage four you order a branded model backed by real data, the point where OEM and ODM work pays off.

Frequently asked questions

What is the smallest bicycle order a Chinese factory will accept?

For a stock model in the factory's own colourway, 20-50 units is realistic, and an LCL trial can combine two or three such models. Below that you are joining an aggregated order.

Is MOQ counted per model or per order?

Per model, and in practice per colour, because paint and decals are batch processes. Frame sizes and saddle variants split freely within one model. Four models at 75 units each is far easier to place than one at 300.

Can I put my own logo on a small order?

Yes, at sticker level: head-badge decals, saddle prints and printed cartons work on small batches because they do not interrupt the line. Custom frame colours and own-brand components require the full category MOQ.

Does a small order change the cost per bike?

Yes. Setup, inspection, documentation and freight handling spread across fewer units, so landed cost per bicycle is higher than at full MOQ, and highest on LCL. Treat it as the price of market information.

How long does a small first order take end to end?

Budget 15-25 days production for stock models plus 3-7 days for consolidation and inspection, then transit: broadly 25-35 days to Northern Europe, 30-40 to the US East Coast, 18-28 to the Gulf, 12-20 to Southeast Asia. LCL adds 7-14 days.

What documents come with a small shipment?

Commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, and your market's conformity file: EN ISO 4210 or EN ISO 8098 reports plus a CE declaration for Europe, CPSC 16 CFR 1512 for the US, EN 15194 or UL 2849 and UN 38.3 for e-bikes. Our importer guide lists the full set.

Where Source of Bikes fits

Every strategy above rests on something you cannot buy quickly: standing relationships with factories willing to bend their minimums for a buyer they trust. We have held those across China's bicycle clusters for over 15 years and export around 30,000 bikes a year to 50+ countries. We match your spec and volume to the right factory, consolidate suppliers into one shipment, inspect 100% of units and prepare the export file.
