China to Destination: Realistic Transit Times and Port Choice for Bicycle Shipments

Short answer: Port-to-port sailing from South China runs about 30-38 days to Rotterdam or Hamburg, 14-20 days to the US West Coast, 30-38 days to the US East Coast, 14-22 days to Jeddah or Jebel Ali and 35-45 days to Santos; Red Sea diversions around the Cape of Good Hope add roughly 10-14 days on Asia-Europe lanes. The sailing is only one leg: add production, five to ten days of pre-vessel cut-offs, then clearance and inland delivery. A first OEM bicycle order realistically reaches your warehouse three to four months after the purchase order, which is why spring stock is ordered the previous autumn.

What does the full timeline from purchase order to warehouse look like?

A bicycle shipment has five legs, each with its own owner and its own failure mode. Only the middle one appears on the carrier's schedule.

  • Production: 25-45 days for a repeat order, longer for a first OEM run
  • Pre-shipment inspection and rework: 5-10 days before the booking is safe
  • Pre-vessel cut-offs and gate-in: 2-5 days before ETD
  • Ocean transit: see the lane table below
  • Clearance, free time and inland trucking: 3-10 days, longer if customs examines the box

Which Chinese port should my bicycles load from?

Factory location, not preference, should set the loading port. Guangdong plants load through Shenzhen/Yantian or Guangzhou Nansha. Yangtze delta factories in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui and Shanghai load through Ningbo or Shanghai. Northern plants in Hebei, Tianjin and Shandong load through Tianjin.

Trucking a 40ft HQ from Guangdong to Shanghai to chase a cheaper ocean rate adds two to three days, adds damage risk to cartons that are only 85-90 percent assembled, and usually erases the saving. If you need a specific port, say so in the RFQ so the factory prices the inland leg openly.

How many days is the port-to-port sailing?

Lane from South ChinaPort-to-port daysNotes
Rotterdam, Hamburg, Antwerp30-38Add 10-14 days via the Cape of Good Hope
US West Coast (LA, Long Beach, Oakland)14-20Rail to the Midwest adds 7-12 days
US East Coast (New York, Savannah)30-38Via Panama; Suez routings vary
Jeddah, Jebel Ali14-22Transhipment adds 5-10 days
Santos and Brazilian ports35-45Usually one transhipment

Every figure assumes a direct service: a transhipment, a blank sailing or an omitted call can each add a week. Ask the forwarder for the routing, not only the days.

What has to happen before the vessel sails?

Most delay is created between booking and departure, and it is documentary rather than physical. The cut-offs do not all fall on the same day.

MilestoneBefore ETDIf you miss it
Booking confirmation10-21 daysNo space allocated
Container gate-in (CY cut-off)2-4 daysBox waits for the next sailing
VGM submission2-3 daysContainer will not be loaded
Shipping instruction (SI) cut-off3-5 daysNo bill of lading; booking is rolled
Customs declaration and documents2-4 daysExport clearance withheld

Missing the SI cut-off usually means rolling to the next sailing: seven days on a weekly service, and far more if the roll lands in the last week of January, when the next departure falls after the factory has closed.

What happens once the vessel arrives?

With a clean document pack — commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin and the conformity file, EN ISO 4210 for the EU or CPSC 16 CFR 1512 for the US — clearance is often same-day to a few days. Bicycles clear under HS 8712.00 and e-bikes under HS 8711.60. E-bikes should travel with the UN 38.3 test summary and battery MSDS, plus EN 15194 evidence for the EU or UL 2849 and UL 2271 for the US.

Free time is what buyers forget: commonly three to seven days. Demurrage accrues while the box sits in the terminal; detention accrues after it leaves, until the empty is returned. A customs examination — X-ray, or a full devanning — adds days nobody can shorten. Book the trucker and the unloading crew before the vessel berths.

How does the Chinese factory calendar change my dates?

Production stops for roughly two to four weeks around Chinese New Year, late January into February, and output stays reduced for a fortnight after reopening because workers return gradually. National Day Golden Week closes plants from 1 to 7 October. Space and equipment also tighten from August to October, so bookings confirm later and rolls become more likely.

How far ahead should I place the order?

Plan backwards from the date the bikes must be on your shop floor, not forwards from the sailing. A first OEM order needs a runway before a booking exists: artwork approval, golden sample, corrections, then pre-shipment inspection. That is why spring-season orders are placed three to four months ahead, and why a buyer wanting March stock confirms specifications in November.

Size matters too. Typical export minimums are 25-50 units for e-bikes, 25-75 for road, 50-150 for city and commuter, 50-100 for mountain and folding, and 100-250 for kids' bikes. Consolidating models into one 40ft HQ beats two smaller shipments on arrival certainty. Our importer guide sets out the sequence.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to ship bicycles from China to Europe?

Port-to-port from South China to Rotterdam or Hamburg is about 30-38 days on a direct service, and roughly 10-14 days longer when vessels route around the Cape of Good Hope. Adding production, cut-offs, clearance and inland delivery, a realistic door-to-door figure is two to three months for a repeat order, three to four for a first OEM order.

How long does it take to ship bicycles from China to the United States?

The US West Coast is the fastest lane at about 14-20 days port-to-port; the East Coast is about 30-38 days. If your warehouse is inland, add seven to twelve days of rail from a West Coast port, which often makes an East Coast all-water routing competitive. Compare door-to-door, never port-to-port.

Can bicycles be shipped by air freight to save time?

Physically yes, commercially almost never: a bicycle is bulky and light, and air freight is charged on volumetric weight. Air suits samples, urgent spare parts and small accessory replenishment. Complete e-bikes face dangerous-goods restrictions that make air shipment harder still.

Should I buy EXW, FOB, CIF or DDP for a bicycle shipment?

FOB gives you control of the ocean leg through your own forwarder, so you see rolls, cut-offs and free time. CIF is simpler for a first order because the supplier arranges main carriage. EXW pushes Chinese export clearance onto you; DDP hides duty and clearance behind one figure.

What delay is most common on a China to Europe bicycle shipment?

Missing a documentation cut-off, particularly the SI cut-off three to five days before ETD, which rolls the booking to the next sailing. Second is a late pre-shipment inspection that finds defects, because rework must then happen before gate-in. Both are avoided by fixing the inspection date when the order is confirmed.
