Short answer: There is no fixed price for shipping a container of bicycles from China: ocean freight is a live rate carriers republish on short cycles. Your number is set by variables you control — FCL versus LCL, container size and utilisation, port pair and routing, season, the Incoterm, destination charges, demurrage exposure and insurance. A credible exporter quotes against your spec, carton size, volume and destination instead of publishing a rate card.
Why will no one give a shipping price without a quotation?
Rates are filed for short validity windows, capacity vanishes with blank sailings, and surcharges for bunker adjustment, peak season and low-sulphur fuel sit above the base rate. The cost structure, however, is stable — knowing it stops you accepting cheap sea freight that hides expensive destination charges.
Is FCL or LCL cheaper for bicycles?
Bicycles are volumetric cargo: a boxed bike is bulky and light, so LCL — charged on the greater of weight or volume — bills you on cubic metres, then adds CFS and deconsolidation fees at both ends. Once your order fills a third to a half of a 20ft container, FCL is usually better value and always lower risk. LCL suits a trial order or a spare parts top-up.
How much do container size and utilisation matter?
Freight is bought per container, not per bike, so every empty cubic metre is money paid and unused.
| Container | Approx. boxed bicycles | Best suited to | Notes |
| 20ft | 250-300 | First orders, single models | Weight limits bite before volume |
| 40ft | 450-520 | Mixed city and mountain | Usually the best cost per unit |
| 40ft HQ | 500-600 | Kids and folding bikes | Height suits stacked light cartons |
| Any size, e-bikes | Materially fewer | EN 15194 programmes | Battery weight and UN 38.3 packing |
MOQs follow the same logic. House minimums — 25-50 e-bikes, 25-75 road, 50-150 city, 50-100 mountain and folding, 100-250 kids — are set so a realistic model mix fills a container rather than shipping air.
How do port pair and routing change the cost?
Origin matters less than expected: Nansha, Yantian, Shekou and Hong Kong all serve South China's bicycle clusters. Destination matters more — a main-line port on a direct service beats a secondary port reached by transhipment, and each transhipment adds days and handling risk. Realistic transit: 18-28 days to Northern Europe, 14-20 to the US West Coast, 20-35 to the East Coast, 12-20 to the Gulf, 25-40 to West Africa or South America.
Does the Incoterm change what you actually pay?
It decides who buys which leg and where surprises land. Comparing an EXW offer with a CIF offer without adjusting for that is the commonest quotation mistake.
| Incoterm | Books the vessel | Covered to | Watch for |
| EXW | Buyer | Factory gate | Export clearance and origin charges are yours |
| FOB | Buyer | On board, origin port | Fix origin local charges in writing |
| CIF | Seller | Destination port, insured | Destination handling still yours |
| DDP | Seller | Your door, duty paid | Seller must know your customs regime |
When is capacity tightest during the year?
The four to six weeks before Chinese New Year are the heaviest booking period of the year, and Golden Week in early October repeats a smaller version; the Q4 retail build lifts demand from August. Allow two to four weeks between readiness and sailing, more in peak.
Which destination charges catch importers out?
Rarely the sea freight line. Terminal handling, ISPS, documentation and delivery order fees, clearance, inland haulage and container cleaning are all charged at destination, plus duty and import VAT against HS 8712.00 for bicycles or HS 8711.60 for e-bikes. Several markets apply extra trade measures to bicycles; ask your broker first.
The most avoidable cost is demurrage and detention: carriers allow only a few free days at the port and a short window to return the empty. Complete documents, including conformity paperwork for EN ISO 4210, EN 15194, EN ISO 8098 or CPSC 16 CFR 1512, are a cost control, not a formality. Our importer guide lists the full set.
Frequently asked questions
Can you quote shipping before the bikes are produced?
Yes, indicatively. Once model, carton dimensions, quantity and destination port are known, we give a freight indication and the full list of charges to expect, with the rate confirmed at booking.
Does a mixed order of different models cost more to ship?
No. Freight is charged per container, so mixing city, mountain and kids bikes in one FCL costs the same as a single model, provided the box is filled.
How many bikes justify a full container?
Around 250 boxed bikes puts you in 20ft FCL territory; 450 or more moves you to a 40ft. Below that, compare LCL against a part-filled FCL, including every destination charge.
Do e-bikes cost more to ship?
Per container the freight is identical, but battery weight and payload limits mean fewer units fit, so cost per unit rises. Lithium batteries also need UN 38.3 documentation and compliant packing.
Do I need marine cargo insurance?
Yes. Carrier liability is capped per package or kilo and will not replace a lost or water-damaged container. All-risk cover is written on CIF value plus ten percent; under EXW and FOB you arrange it yourself.
Where Source of Bikes fits
We have exported bicycles from Guangzhou for over fifteen years to more than fifty countries, so we plan the container before the order is placed: a load plan that fills the box, consolidation from several vetted factories into one FCL, 100% inspection before sealing, and clean documentation.
