Short answer: A standard 40ft container holds roughly 450-520 boxed bicycles and a 40ft High Cube (HQ) roughly 500-600, against about 250-300 in a 20ft. The HQ carries more because its extra internal height allows one more usable tier of bike cartons. Bicycles fill the container's volume long before reaching its weight limit, so e-bikes are the exception: heavier, thicker cartons mean planning at the bottom of those ranges or below.
What are the internal dimensions of a 40ft and a 40ft HQ container?
Both share the same floor plan, and the only difference that matters is height. Figures are nominal and vary slightly by container age and builder.
| Specification | 20ft | 40ft standard | 40ft High Cube |
| Internal length | ~5.90 m | ~12.03 m | ~12.03 m |
| Internal width | ~2.35 m | ~2.35 m | ~2.35 m |
| Internal height | ~2.39 m | ~2.39 m | ~2.69 m |
| Door opening height | ~2.28 m | ~2.28 m | ~2.58 m |
| Usable volume | ~33 CBM | ~67 CBM | ~76 CBM |
| Typical max payload | ~28 t | ~26-28 t | ~26-28 t |
| Boxed bicycles, typical | 250-300 | 450-520 | 500-600 |
| Boxed e-bikes, typical | 170-220 | 320-400 | 360-450 |
Why does a 40ft HQ hold more bicycles than a standard 40ft?
It comes down to tiers. A 26 inch or 700c adult bicycle carton is roughly 140-150 cm long, 75-90 cm tall and 20-28 cm thick, loaded standing on its long edge. In a 2.39 m standard 40ft you build two full tiers and are left with a gap too shallow for a third. In a 2.69 m HQ that leftover becomes a real third tier. The HQ adds about 9 CBM but often adds proportionally more bicycles, because dead headroom becomes loadable space.
Do bicycles cube out or weigh out in a 40ft container?
They cube out, essentially always. A boxed adult city or mountain bike weighs around 16-20 kg gross, so a full 40ft HQ lands near 9-11 tonnes against a payload allowance above 26 tonnes. Packing, carton thickness and stacking therefore convert directly into units shipped. Weight only binds on heavy models or where destination road rules cap gross weight per container.
How many e-bikes fit in a 40ft HQ container?
Plan on roughly 360-450 e-bikes in a 40ft HQ and 320-400 in a standard 40ft. Cartons are thicker to protect the motor, controller and battery mount, and gross weight runs about 28-35 kg per unit, so at the top of the count the payload limit deserves a check before booking.
Compliance also shapes loading. Lithium batteries need a UN 38.3 test summary, and carriers set their own rules on batteries travelling installed or packed separately. Expect EN 15194 in the EU and UL 2849 where requested. E-bikes classify under HS 8711.60, conventional bicycles under HS 8712.00.
What changes the bicycle count inside the same container?
- Packing level. Standard export packing is about 85 percent assembled: pedals off, handlebar turned, front wheel removed. CKD or SKD lifts unit count but moves assembly to your side.
- Wheel and frame size. A container of 20 inch kids bikes holds far more units than the same box of 29 inch mountain bikes.
- Carton discipline. Alternating cartons head to tail and holding thickness tolerance is worth dozens of units per 40ft.
- Pallets versus floor loading. Palletised bikes discharge faster but typically cost around 10-15 percent of capacity.
- Void filling. Spare parts and accessories fill nose, door and roof voids bicycle cartons cannot use.
When does stepping up from a 20ft to a 40ft actually pay off?
Ocean freight is charged per container, not per bicycle, so the freight share each unit carries falls as the box gets fuller and larger. A 40ft does not cost double a 20ft while carrying roughly double the cube, so the crossover arrives earlier than doubling your order would suggest. Terminal handling, clearance and inland delivery are also largely per container.
The trap is the half-empty 40ft, worse per unit than a tightly packed 20ft. If one model cannot fill the box, combine models: our house MOQs are 50-150 units city and commuter, 50-100 mountain, 50-100 folding, 25-75 road, 100-250 kids, 25-50 e-bikes. Two or three models plus a spare parts block normally completes a 40ft HQ.
Frequently asked questions
How many bicycles fit in a 40ft HQ container?
Roughly 500-600 boxed adult bicycles in standard export packing. Kids bikes push above that range while large-frame 29 inch mountain bikes and fat bikes pull below it. The exact count is confirmed from final carton dimensions.
Is a 40ft HQ always better than a standard 40ft?
For bicycles, almost always, because the cargo is bulky and light and the extra 30 cm converts into a usable tier. Exceptions are route specific: some inland corridors and low-clearance delivery points restrict HQ units, so confirm availability for your destination.
How many e-bikes fit in a 40ft container?
Around 320-400 in a standard 40ft and 360-450 in a 40ft HQ. Thicker cartons and roughly 28-35 kg gross per unit cut the count versus conventional bicycles. Battery arrangements and UN 38.3 documentation should be settled before booking.
Can I mix different bicycle models in one 40ft container?
Yes, and for most importers it is the smarter way to fill a 40ft. Each model still meets its own MOQ, but two or three models plus spare parts reach a full container without overcommitting to one SKU.
What documents come with a full container of bicycles?
Commercial invoice, packing list with carton dimensions and weights, bill of lading, and your market's certificate of origin. Add applicable test reports such as EN ISO 4210, EN ISO 8098 for children's bicycles, CPSC 16 CFR 1512 for the United States, and EN 15194 plus UN 38.3 for e-bikes. Declare HS 8712.00, or HS 8711.60 for e-bikes.
Where Source of Bikes fits
From our Guangzhou office we have spent 15+ years matching buyers to vetted factories across China's bicycle clusters, exporting around 30,000 bikes a year to more than 50 countries. We size the container to your model mix, plan the loading so the cube is genuinely used, inspect 100 percent before shipment, and consolidate models and spare parts into one FCL under EXW, FOB, CIF or DDP.
