How Small Buyers Actually Get Access to Chinese Bicycle Factories

Short answer: China's bicycle factories cluster in four regions — Tianjin and Hebei, the Kunshan and Jiangsu belt, Zhejiang (Yongkang, Taizhou, Hangzhou) and Guangdong (Shenzhen, Dongguan, Huizhou) — plus Xiamen for higher-end frames. Finding them is easy: the Canton Fair, China Cycle in Shanghai, B2B directories and import records list them all. Getting an export-grade factory to take a small enquiry seriously is the hard part, because most hold per-model minimums near 50-150 city bikes or 25-50 e-bikes. Small buyers get in through an export partner who aggregates orders, ships mixed containers and starts with a trial order that scales.

Where are the factories, and which ones suit small buyers?

ClusterKnown forFit for small orders
Tianjin and HebeiVolume city, kids, cruiser, entry mountainStrict MOQ discipline; lines held by big accounts
Kunshan and JiangsuE-bikes, alloy frames, EN 15194 and UL 2849Best for e-bikes; UN 38.3 paperwork in place
ZhejiangFolding, kids, components, accessoriesMost flexible on short, multi-model runs
GuangdongE-bikes, fat bikes, controllers, electronicsNear the ports; easiest for mixed containers
Xiamen and FujianHigher-end alloy and carbon, road, gravelHigher paint minimums; strong on road builds

Why do good factories ignore small enquiries?

It is rarely arrogance. It is arithmetic.

  • Changeover cost. Every frame model needs jigs and a line setup that only pays back over a run.
  • Batch minimums. Each paint colour is a batch, and component suppliers impose MOQs no factory can break for one buyer.
  • Certification is fixed. EN ISO 4210, EN ISO 8098, EN 15194 and CPSC 16 CFR 1512 reports are per model, not per unit.
  • Incentives and traders. Reps carry annual targets, so an email with no spec or destination is triaged out at once — and many listings are traders who control nothing.

What minimum order quantities should you plan for?

Realistic export MOQs, read per model and per colour: e-bikes 25-50 units, road 25-75, city and commuter 50-150, mountain 50-100, folding 50-100, kids 100-250. Capacity is the other half: a 20ft container holds roughly 250-300 bikes, a 40ft around 450-520, a 40ft HQ around 500-600, fewer for heavy e-bikes. Two or three models can fill a container without deep commitment to any one.

How does a trial order become a supply line?

  1. Send a specific enquiry: category, frame sizes, groupset, wheel size, target standard, quantity, Incoterm (EXW, FOB, CIF, DDP) and destination port.
  2. Approve a pre-production sample in writing. Samples take 15-25 days, production 30-45 days, 25-35 on a repeat.
  3. Inspect before shipment, never after. Documents: invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, test reports, plus UN 38.3 and MSDS for batteries. HS 8712.00 covers bicycles, HS 8711.60 e-bikes.
  4. Allow 25-40 days of sea transit, then reorder to earn line priority. Our importer guide covers the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit bicycle factories in China myself?

Yes, and it pays off once you have real volume. The Canton Fair in Guangzhou each April and October and China Cycle in Shanghai each May gather hundreds of manufacturers in one hall. Without an appointment, floor access is limited.

Is Alibaba a reliable way to find bicycle factories?

Treat it as a map, not a filter. Verify the licence scope, ISO 9001 and whether test reports carry that company's own name. Then ask for line video and export markets served.

Can a factory lower its MOQ for me?

Sometimes, and always in exchange for something: an existing platform instead of new tooling, a single colour, standard components, or better payment terms. What a factory cannot do is break the minimums its own component suppliers impose, which is exactly where aggregation helps.

Do OEM orders carry higher minimums than stock models?

Usually the opposite. Your logo and colour on an existing platform sits at the low end of the ranges above; a bespoke frame needing new tooling sits at the high end. See our OEM page.

How long until bikes reach my warehouse?

Plan roughly 90-120 days from first enquiry to arrival, covering sampling, production, inspection and sea freight. Repeat orders run 20-30 days shorter, because sampling and certification are already done.

Where Source of Bikes fits

We already hold what a small buyer would otherwise spend months building: vetted factory relationships across Tianjin, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Guangdong, and the standing accounts that get a modest order onto a real line. We match your spec and volume to the right factory, aggregate orders, consolidate mixed containers, inspect 100% of units before shipment and handle the export documents. After 15+ years and about 30,000 bikes a year to 50+ countries, we are usually already talking to the factory you want.

Send us your requirement — categories, quantities, target market and destination port — and we will reply with a tailored quotation and a factory match. Message WhatsApp +8617702000155, email [email protected] or browse our bicycle range.
