Short answer: Bicycle OEM means a factory builds one of its existing, already-tooled models for you and finishes it under your brand — logo, colourway, decals, packaging, manual and barcode. The frame mould, geometry and core engineering stay the factory's: you customise identity and specification, not the bicycle itself. Because no new tooling is created, OEM stays inside normal MOQs — roughly 50–150 city bikes, 25–50 e-bikes — and adds only two to four weeks to a standard lead time.
What does bicycle OEM actually mean?
OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. The factory already owns a proven platform: a frame welded thousands of times, a drivetrain bought in volume, and current test reports against EN ISO 4210 or CPSC 16 CFR 1512. It builds that platform wearing your name instead of its own, so the engineering risk sits with a design that has been in production for years. If you need geometry or features that do not yet exist, that is ODM — see OEM vs ODM.
What is customisable under OEM, and what is fixed?
| Element | Under OEM | Notes |
| Logo, decals, head badge | Customisable | Your artwork, under clear coat or printed |
| Frame colour and finish | Customisable | Factory colours, or custom with a per-colour minimum |
| Component specification | Within the factory's approved supplier list | Groupset, wheels, tyres, saddle, brakes, lighting |
| Motor, battery, display (e-bikes) | Selectable from qualified options | Must stay inside the tested EN 15194 / UL 2849 build |
| Carton, manual, barcode, warranty card | Customisable | Your language, your EAN/UPC, your after-sales details |
| Frame geometry, mould, tube set | Fixed | New tooling means ODM, not OEM |
| Certification scope | Fixed to the model's existing reports | Branding is safe; component changes may not be |
How does the artwork and decal process work?
Send vector artwork — AI, EPS or vector PDF — with Pantone references and a placement drawing for down tube, top tube and fork. The factory returns a digital mock-up on the real frame drawing, then a decal sheet or painted sample. Water-transfer decals sit under the clear coat and survive cleaning; printed vinyl goes on after and is easier to change between runs. Screen or die setup is a one-off per artwork and colour, which is why repeat orders run faster. Custom paint is the underestimated item: a non-standard colour means a dedicated batch and a line changeover, so factories set a minimum per colour.
How does OEM affect MOQ and lead time?
| Category | Typical OEM MOQ | Practical note |
| E-bikes | 25–50 units | Battery documentation (UN 38.3) governs the schedule |
| Road bikes | 25–75 units | Size split matters more than colour split |
| City / commuter | 50–150 units | Most flexible category for colour and branding |
| Mountain bikes | 50–100 units | Fork and groupset drive the spec discussion |
| Folding bikes | 50–100 units | Hinge and latch fixed, cosmetics open |
| Kids' bikes | 100–250 units | Must stay inside EN ISO 8098 / CPSC scope |
Allow roughly 10–20 days for a branded sample including artwork proofing, then about 30–45 days of production after approval, plus sea transit. Stock orders ship sooner because they skip the artwork loop, and that gap — not the MOQ — usually decides a first season. A 40ft HQ holds about 500–600 conventional bikes, fewer for e-bikes.
Who owns the brand, and what about trademarks?
You own the logo, artwork and brand; the factory owns the frame design and moulds. Register your trademark in the market where you sell before the first branded container lands — that registration, not the supply contract, is what lets you stop a copy at your border. China operates a first-to-file system, so many brands file there as well. Expect your supplier to request a brand authorisation letter confirming it may apply your mark, which is routine for branded exports under HS 8712.00 or 8711.60.
How does sample approval work?
Approve in two stages: a specification sample in a factory colour to confirm the bike and components, then a branded pre-production sample with final decals, paint and retail carton. That second sample becomes the reference the production run is inspected against, so sign off in writing on photographs from every angle before mass production starts.
When is OEM the right choice instead of stock models?
OEM makes sense when you sell to end users under your own name, when after-sales sits with you, and when competitors are all selling visibly unbranded bikes. Buy stock when you are testing a market, need goods this quarter, or your buyers care about availability rather than the name on the down tube. Many importers run one season of stock from our bicycle range, then move the best sellers to OEM.
Frequently asked questions
Is bicycle OEM the same as private label?
In practice yes — private label is the retail term, OEM the manufacturing term for the same arrangement. What matters is whether the frame design belongs to the factory (OEM) or is newly developed for you (ODM).
Do I need a registered trademark before starting an OEM order?
You can begin artwork and sampling without one, but do not run full branded production without protection in your selling market. Registration is what gives you recourse against copies. Most suppliers, ourselves included, also ask for a written brand authorisation letter.
Can I order several colours or models in one OEM shipment?
Yes, and consolidating is the sensible way to fill a container. Each colour carries its own minimum because of the paint batch, and each model its own MOQ, so the arithmetic is per variant rather than per shipment.
Does putting my brand on a bike change its certification?
Cosmetic branding does not affect the reports behind EN ISO 4210, EN ISO 8098, EN 15194 or CPSC 16 CFR 1512. Changing components can: a different fork, brake or battery pack may fall outside the tested configuration. Confirm current destination requirements with your customs broker or with us.
How much longer does OEM take than buying stock bikes?
Typically two to four extra weeks for artwork proofing, the branded sample and decal setup. Repeat orders lose most of that penalty because screens and artwork already exist. Battery models often need more calendar time for documentation than for production.
How Source of Bikes handles this for you
We run the whole OEM loop from Guangzhou, so you deal with one counterpart instead of a factory, a decal shop and a forwarder. We match your model list to factories whose platforms already suit your market and whose test reports are current, then manage artwork proofing, Pantone matching, decal setup and the branded pre-production sample. Every branded order is 100% inspected before shipment against your approved sample — logo placement, colour, carton and manual, not only the mechanical build. We also prepare the brand authorisation paperwork and keep matching spare parts available for later warranty years.
Send us your model list, target quantity per model, destination port or market, and your logo files or branding requirements, and we will return a tailored quotation, MOQ confirmation per variant and a realistic schedule.
