Carton volume multiplied by unit count will not equal 33 cbm, and it should not. Bicycle cartons are wedge-shaped because of the handlebar and saddle, so they are stowed alternating nose to tail, with wheel boxes and pedal cartons filling the voids. How does the assembly level change the count?
The same bicycle occupies very different space depending on how far it is taken apart before boxing.
- Fully assembled - almost never used for sea freight. Cuts the count by roughly 35-45% and gains nothing.
- KD, around 85% assembled - the export standard. Front wheel off or turned, handlebar rotated, pedals detached, saddle lowered. Destination labour is 10-15 minutes per bike.
- CKD, fully knocked down - frame, fork and wheels packed flat in separate cartons. Density rises 25-40% over KD, but you need a workshop with torque tools, and the assembler becomes responsible for the final build under EN ISO 4210 or CPSC 16 CFR 1512.
CKD pays only if you already run assembly capacity. Otherwise labour and warranty exposure erase the space you gained.
Do bicycles ever reach the weight limit of a 20ft?
No. Three hundred boxed city bikes weigh roughly 5,000-6,000 kg against a payload near 28,000 kg. Bicycles always cube out and never weigh out, and that is the most useful planning fact here: the residual payload is free capacity for dense goods. How do you build an order list that fills a 20ft exactly?
- Plan in cube, not units. Start from 28-30 cbm usable, not 33.
- Ask each factory for real carton dimensions and cbm from the packing list, not estimates.
- Give every model a percentage block of the cube, then convert to units.
- Check each block against MOQ: e-bikes 25-50, road 25-75, mountain 50-100, folding 50-100, city 50-150, kids 100-250.
- Reserve 8-10% of cube for parts and accessories.
- Approve a written loading plan before the deposit, and require VGM before the port cut-off.

What is different about e-bikes in a 20ft?
Two things. Cartons are larger and heavier, so plan on 120-160 units rather than 250-300. And lithium batteries are Class 9 dangerous goods: expect UN 38.3 test reports, an MSDS, a declaration under UN 3171, and EN 15194 or UL 2849 conformity for the complete bike. Carriers restrict battery stowage, so book earlier than for HS 8712.00 bicycles.
