Why does a bicycle factory need its own audit checklist?
A generic supplier audit looks at fire exits and a framed certificate. It will not tell you whether a frame survives EN ISO 4210-6 fatigue testing, whether wheels are tensioned by machine or by a tired hand at shift end, or whether the brake levers on your order match the bill of materials. An export bicycle is a safety-critical assembly of 150 to 250 bought-in parts, and most field failures trace back to frame preparation, wheel build quality and assembly torque.
What documents should you verify first?
- ISO 9001:2015 — read the scope line: it must say bicycle manufacture or assembly, not trading. Verify the number in the certification body's public registry, with expiry date and audited site address.
- BSCI or Sedex SMETA — required by most European and North American retail chains. SMETA exists in 2-pillar and 4-pillar versions; confirm which your customer accepts.
- Business licence — year of establishment, registered capital, and an address matching the site being shown.
- Test reports — in the factory's own name and per model, not a family report from a component maker.
- E-bike file — EN 15194 for the complete EPAC, UN 38.3 for battery transport, plus UL 2849 and UL 2271 for the US.
Which production processes must be in-house?
- Frame welding with jigs. Fixtures should be model-specific with a documented check interval. Ask how alignment is verified after welding and what the rework rate is.
- Pretreatment and paint. A phosphating line ahead of e-coat or powder coating is the best single predictor of corrosion performance. A spray booth with no pretreatment is a risk in humid and coastal markets.
- Wheel building and truing. Machine lacing or at least machine tensioning, then truing to a recorded spoke tension range. Hand-only building at volume produces loose spokes inside the first 100 km.
- Torque-controlled final assembly. Calibrated wrenches or electric drivers on stem, handlebar, crank, pedal and caliper bolts, with calibration stickers and a daily verification log.
What test equipment should the lab actually have?
Ask for a photo of each rig with its serial plate and calibration date, then match it against this table.

How should outgoing inspection be documented?
Ask for the written procedure, not a verbal answer. A credible factory samples finished cartons to ISO 2859-1, general inspection level II, at a declared AQL — commonly 2.5 major and 4.0 minor. The report should state lot size, sample size, defects by classification, and an accept or reject decision signed by a QC manager who does not report to production. Insist on functional brake performance checks and torque verification on safety-critical fasteners.
How do you separate real capacity from claimed capacity?
Claimed annual capacity is marketing. Ask for the number of assembly lines, workers per line, cycle time per unit, and the resulting daily and monthly output, then multiply it yourself. Then ask what matters: how much of the January to April peak is already booked? Sanity-check the answer against realistic MOQs — e-bikes 25 to 50 units, road 25 to 75, city and commuter 50 to 150, mountain 50 to 100, folding 50 to 100, kids 100 to 250.
What traceability proves the bike you inspected is the bike you receive?
Three records close the loop: frame serial numbering, stamped or laser-etched and logged against batch and order number, so a warranty claim two years later reaches a specific welding shift; incoming component inspection records with lot checks on rims, hubs, chains, brakes and forks; and a named component supplier list covering groupset, brakes, chain and rims, with a clause requiring your written approval before substitution. Put that clause in the contract alongside HS classification (8712.00 bicycles, 8711.60 e-bikes) and your Incoterm: EXW, FOB, CIF or DDP.
How do you run this audit remotely by video?
Send the checklist 48 hours ahead and book 90 to 120 minutes during a working shift. Ask for one live camera walked from tube cutting to cartoning without cutting the feed, stopping at the welding jigs, pretreatment tanks, truing station, torque tools, test lab and warehouse. Request a spontaneous close-up — a serial number in the paint queue, a calibration sticker, today's inspection report — because pre-recorded footage cannot answer that. Then place a trial order, ideally one 20ft container before a 40ft HQ programme.

Does the factory need its own test lab, or is a third-party report enough?
Accredited third-party reports are the legal evidence for CE, UKCA or CPSC purposes. An in-house lab matters for a different reason: it shows the factory can test during development and between orders, not only when a certificate expires. The strongest suppliers have both.
How far ahead should I book to avoid the peak season?
January to April is the busiest window for Chinese bicycle export. Confirm your order 60 to 90 days before you need goods at the port, and add 15 to 30 days for new tooling, custom paint or OEM branding.
